One of the most common issues affecting the foot during the winter is dryness and cracking of the skin. The low humidity levels, and having our feet it warm socks, predispose our skin to loosing its moisture content and "drying out". This can lead to eventual cracking of the skin, and possibly deep "fissures" that can, in some instances, begin to bleed.
In healthily people with good circulation and no diabetic or other major disease problems, simple moisturizing usually takes care of the problem. However, those people that suffer with conditions such as diabetes or poor circulation, these cracks and fissures can lead to problems. They can easily become infected, causing problems that could lead to severe complications.
If you suffer with dry, cracking skin; or deep fissuring and bleeding, be sure to be pro-active with moisturizing creams and lotions. If you are a person suffering from diabetes or vascular problems, be sure to consult with you Podiatrist regarding chronic dryness, cracking, or fissuring and bleeding skin of the feet.
